Ok, so this afternoon I have to post a bit on the anti-choice display that was on campus today. I can't in all good conscience call them pro-life, as that does seem to cloud issues a bit. I'm not anti-life, or pro-death (except in certain circumstances to certain people who have already gestated and emerged and are currently walking around and pissing me off, but that's neither here nor there. and the fact that if there weren't any death, this planet would be even more overpopulated. So yes, I suppose I really am pro-death. Anyway.) I just tried to rant about it, but it's much to early in the morning to write coherently, and I'm still much too annoyed at being forced to look at massive posters of aborted fetuses at 10.30 in the morning. I mean really. I'm barely awake now. This shit's gonna give me nightmares in my next class.

They would argue that they aren't anti-choice, but anti-murder as a choice. You know I don't agree with them, but it is all semantics. No one is really against choice or life... it's a matter of priorities and views on life. But post away, field one for a cause that needs it.

Yeah, I know I was just bitching about semantics, I just don't like the way they decided to word it. It ends up sounding so loaded, and it really annoys me. But then, semantics was all I was really prepared to argue at that point.

The problem with this particular issue is that there are no ways of wording it that aren't so loaded. You can never get people on both sides of the issue to have a conversation in part because the labels are personal attacks (anti-life/anti-choice or pro-death/pro-government control of woman's bodies). But still "pro-lifers" hand out plenty of reasons to bitch, not the least of which is a society in which women have equal opportunities to men is not possible if they do not have absolute control of the child-bearing process. For a very good enumeration of how childbirth realities effect gender equality you should read (or reread) The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin.

True. I don't know, I'm personally fond of the term anti-abortion. They are, and can't really deny it. I don't doubt that they like having choices in other matters, and I am quite fond of life and advocate living it. And I'm fine with letting them talk, and present their arguments and try to reson with people. I'm all for debate, but I don't think they have any right to force their opinions on anyone else, until they can find good, conclusive beyond a reasonable doubt proof that a fetus is truly a person in all ways.

I'm willing to concede that it's a person, but it requires my body to stay alive and no one has the right to demand my entire life for 9 months in order to sustain their own.
