Rebuilding, repairing, refinishing
Aug. 14th, 2002 11:58 amEventually the time comes that I have to actually work on intended projects. And this appears to be it. My mother gave me several years ago a small dining room table that she had picked up at a yard sale for a dollar. Someone had left it out in the rain, or something like that, so the entire top has to be replaced. When it was in my kitchen in Galway, my brother decided that it was, despite being already fragile, a perfect place to cut a large piece of meat. With a large cleaver. And no sparing of the blow, either. It proved too much for the legs of that side, so I have to put that side back together as well. There wasn't any splintering, the joints merely gave out, so it's not that bad. I took one of the pieces to the hardware store, and the fellow I spoke with said it was, of all things, mahogany.
I'm shocked at the sheer number of things I needed to buy. Stripper, a putty knife, wood putty, little corrugated metal things that serve like nails, cheap brushes, a nice brush, stain, wood glue, more sandpaper, a metal brush to remove the old varnish in the carving, some replacement hardware.... Oh yes, and a piece of wood to replace a piece that had been obliterated. I have a quarter of the original, all that remains of it. And I have to find a suitable piece for the top. And new veneer. Chances are there will be a lot more spent on this than would appear reasonable in the face of its current state (in pieces, slightly warped, on its side, in one of the random rooms here). I don't care. It's fun. And I've never had a functional dining room table before....
Anyone have any ideas for cleaning old brass?
And I think if there's any stripper left, I'll redo my desk, too. And hell, why not the chair as well? Yay for being productive.
In other news, I applied for a job at a porn shop last week, but I'm not sure how much I'll pursue it. I like my current job, I like the hours I have there, and I don't know what sort of hours I could get at this place. If it was a 5-9 or 10 deal on a few nights a week, that would be fine. Provided, of course, that I could get there on time, which is always questionable given that I will be having classes soon as well. And it might be better to stay with the annoying evil that you know rather than the annoying evil that you don't. As long as it's not during the day, I like Alfred's. I just don't like day people. I like working with Fern, but not Eleanor, and sure as hell not Larry. Eh. If it's meant to happen, they'll call me back, but I don't really feel like pursuing it at the moment.
Classes start soon. I can't wait. Anything to start having to use brain cells again....
