I think I had the same professor for The Novel back when I was still at New Paltz - is he old, always comes into class just as it's starting, with really bad teeth and fly-away white hair? I'll be checking my old notebooks to see if I can find his name...I just remember the exam being exactly like you described and it was incredibly painful!
