In news totally unrelated to school, I just found a painting that shows a dress I would love to make. In different colours though, I think. It's by Rogier van der Weyden, and it looks lovely. Also it proves that the dress I saw on someone's catalogoue was in fact period with its waist seams. Heh. Go figure. It looks pretty decent though, even without the princess seaming, thoug I thinkI'll keep that in mine. Looks like I'm getting later in period again.... This is 1430. Eh, I can still keep the kirtles I have, use them as underdresses and as less formal outerdresses, and then make nifty pretty later dresses. Because even in the Burgundian era they seem to have the clothing from the previous eras, but with new ones for variety. I like variety. Anyway. The painting I found has amazing littel details, like where the seams are, even the piecing in the skirt, and how the lacing holes are done. Tiny little metal rings sewn down on less than a quarter of the circumfrence, it's own width from the edge of the gown. This is remarkably useful for me. I now know how to close my dresses without doing insane numbers of buttonholes. Looking for details of how the lace is tied, but so far without lock. Eh, whatever, I'm happy anyway. It also shows how the sleeves are attached--with a little silver pin, on the outside of the sleeve. It's painted in a pea-soup green with bright red brocade sleeves, with a pattern large enough to use on a couch. I disapprove. The brocade can stay, but neither of these colours works for me. The blue one is much better. Mary Magdalene with a hat that looks like something out of one of the history of Irish dress books, from about the Tudor era. Very long strip of fabric wrapped around and around the head as many times as possible, to make it as thick as you can. Looks silly, really.

Another dress has lacing holes in the fabric. It's spiraled, but the holes aren't offset, so my green dress isn't entirely ruined. Yay!

Wool. Definately wool. That would be nice and warm....
