Victorious!

If anyone cares, I actually got into the Medieval Women class. Hooray! I am ever so pleased with that, seeing as it's one of the courses that Albany does not offer. And I'm loving the assignments so much I'm already ahead on them. Such awesome articles, as [livejournal.com profile] manycolored has seen. Some really funny original sources, if you want to call St Jerome telling people not to marry because wemen are evil, or Tertullian telling women that they should be ugly because otherwise they are hazardous to men's piety in any way funny. Dies and Pauper is good though. Aristotle and Galen's treatises on women's bodies are just amusing. I mean, even people with the most basic 8th grade understanding of pysiology have at least some idea of the fact that everything they say is *wrong*. (If anyone is interested I can send a link. It requires a password, so I"m probably not supposed to, but I doubt that too many people will be clamoring for it.)Anyway, I find it highly interesting. This semester is full of Medieval sex. This is good. I like having homework that I enjoy doing, even if the result is a righteous indignation that makes me want to thwap stupid dead people and show them every place their logic is flawed, and every place they're just simply *wrong*. Heh. The poetry is great, though. It's good when a prof hands out a poem on the first day and within a few seconds one hears quiet snickers and giggles.

yeah, they freakin thought that your uterus floated around your body. wierdos.

When, of course, they even thought you *had* a uterus. Aristotle had no idea there were ovaries. He thought all that a woman offered to pregnancy was a body to house the seed of a person found only in the male organs.

What years are you going up to? If you don't have Margery Kempe's The Booke of Margery Kempe and the writings of Julian, anchoress of Norwich on your syllabus, I'd track them down. They are both wonderful reading, and were the subject of a paper I wrote called "Unveiling the Mystic: Saints, Sinners, Sex and Feminism in the Writing of Margery and Julian" last spring.

Oh, and clamour, clamour, clamour!!!

We are doing Margery Kempe, the miserable bitch. But not Julian of Norwich, who I liked much better. We did selections from her writings in English Lit 1. We're also reading romances by Marie de France, whom I love.

Cool and congratulations. It occurs to me that you might be able to clear something up for me - once long ago someone explained to me (in the context of a friendly debate about endemic race/sexism, and how it manifests in things like language) that the origin of the word clitoris orig. meant something to the effect of "That of which one ought to be ashamed..." (Feh. Medieval fuckheads....) - any verificaiton perhaps? Just one of those curiosity things....

Umm.... Not a clue, but I'll look it up. Sounds like interesting information....

:D Thanks. Hopefully if naught else it will prove an interesting direction to go randomly 'digging', eh?
